Steven Sadro and Adrianne Smits study climate variation in Sierra Nevada lakes
Losing Winter
Amid Snow and Ice Declines, What Happens to Sierra Lakes in the Winter?
Adrianne Smits, National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at UC Davis, use underwater sensors in remote Sierra Nevada mountain lakes to study how climate variations affect ice cover. Hourly measurements were utilized to study ice cover, under-ice temperature, oxygen concentrations.
Lead author Smits' selected lakes are located in the Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains. The same lake network is used in two other long-term studies by Distinguished Professor Emeritus Charles R. Goldman and Assistant Professor Steven Sadro.
