Lectures
  • Class meetings will have an asynchronous and synchronous component. For those who wish to participate in in-person field activities (live-course component), we will meet at various field sites synchronously to learn field methods and collect data used in our analyses, while maintaining all necessary Covid-safety protocols (e.g., social distancing, mask wearing, disinfecting instruments between use). For those unable to attend, we will record demonstration videos of these activities that can be viewed asynchronously.
  • Attendance in synchronous lectures is required. Part of the synchronous meetings will include going over logistics, data analysis, and discussion.

Lectures
  • Lectures will be conducted synchronously and asynchronously.  I provide pre recordings of my lecture videos and lecture synchronously.
  • Attendance during the synchronous Zoom meeting is strongly encouraged but not required.
  • Due to privacy concerns and my own concern about chilling open and robust discussion in Zoom meetings, I do not record synchronous sessions.  The essential content of those sessions is in pre-recorded videos posted to Canvas.
Discussion sections
  • Discussion sections are synchronous with at least four options.  Students who cannot make it to one of the four discussion sections can meet their participation requirement for discussion by meeting with the TA in office hours to go over what they missed.
  • Attendance is synchronous discussion sections is required, but we have a lot of flexibility to allow students to attend discussion at alternate times or make-up missed discussions in other ways.
  • Synchronous discussion material will not be recorded and made available to students but students can meet with the TA separately in office hours to go over the content they missed.
Exams
  • Exams will be administered on canvas.  If a student cannot make the synchronous exam time they can make alternate arrangements with the instructor and TAs to take it.
  • The mid term will be at a scheduled time, during lecture, but we are flexible with making alternate arrangements.  The final exam will likely be released before the end of the quarter and offered over a longer time, but I have not made a final decision about that yet.
  • Students in different time zones will have options to take exams in their own time zone
  • Students are not required to have their webcam on during the exam
Additional course logistics
  • Office hours will be conducted via zoom
  • I do not require students to keep their cameras on or to use a microphone to talk.  For their own audio, students can dial-in to the Zoom meeting using their phone for audio.  They will need a computer for video to see what I am displaying on PowerPoint.
  • I can provide the course syllabi and paper guidelines upon request.
